Kauni Love

A year or so ago, I made a Baktus Scarf using Kauni yarn. The long colorways & color transitions make this one of my favorite yarns. Aunt E & Jen are currently doing a KAL (knit-a-long) for a Kauni shawl/wrap we saw at Stitches Midwest. Not to be left out, I went to my stash for the black/gray/white combo which is becoming a great Leaf Lace Scarf

The pattern is quick & super simple so hopefully I'll finish before the cooler weather settles in. Mom's eyes sparkled when I showed it to her so I probably won't get to keep it for myself (lol).

Finished the Minimalist Top aka the "Fuzzy Wuzzy Bear" sweater. All the stockinette wore me down so it didn't quite make it to tunic length. Fits nicely though & oh so warm. This was supposed to be my year of "11 Sweaters in 2011"....... well, Fuzzy Wuzzy officially rolls in as #1. What can I say but I certainly had good intentions.

Yarn Blast in the Midwest

This year's Stitches Midwest was a blast. Aunt E & I met up with Jen in the burbs of Chicago this past weekend for a knitting getaway of yarns, gadgets, and books. This was our 3rd year in attendance & we were immediately greeted by....... What a hoot!

I got to visit all me favorite vendors - Signature Needle Arts, Miss Babs Yarns, WEBS, and Habu Textiles - as well as some new favorites: Erin Lane Bags, Flying Fingers, The Yarn & Fiber Company, Windy Valley Musk Ox, and Fiber Optic.

Plenty of goodies but I think my favorite has to be the Habu hand-dyed cashmere & the silk/mohair blend from Capistrano Fiber Arts (sold by Habu). Planning a couple of luxury scarves for me & only me (lol). Here's some shots from the weekend ................

I even managed to start & finish a project over the weekend. WEBS gave away a mini-skein of Berroco Boboli at the festival that I turned into a headband for DD#1. The Boboli is ultra soft & great to knit with.

Knitting Nook - DIY Style

Trying to get my "knitting seasons" in sync. Seems that by the time Autumn rolls around, I should have at least a couple of cardigans, car coats & wraps completed. Headed in the right direction. I finished Jared Flood's Guernsey Wrap in an olive color which will be great for early fall. Didn't follow all the repeats but it's certainly long enough to wraparound a couple times.

Also finishing the Mohair Minimalist by Anna Kuduja. It's a top-down seamless top in stockinette stitch. Found myself with an extended ER wait with Mom earlier in the month so this baby was practically finished in a weekend. That was the positive - the not-so-positive was that I obviously used a heavier mohair than the original pattern envisioned so mine isn't so sheer. But it will be perfect for winter when I'm going for the fuzzy-wuzzy-wuzza-bear look (lol). Making it tunic length so maybe mama bear?

All my years & years of watching HGTV have finally paid off. I needed to convert the former knitting room back to a bedroom & find some space for the yarn & knitting paraphernalia. Drum roll please........... meet my Knitting Nook!

With a great chair find on Craigslist, floor tiles from Lowes (love them!), and all my knitting gear, I'm in knitters heaven........also known as the oversized closet of my bedroom. I had a blast & looking forward to starting my next project when I return from Stitches Midwest this weekend.

Another Year Older

So much going on. Days are whizzing by. Mom's chemo treatments are ongoing; DD#2 scored a great new job; DD#1 was honored as Citizen of the Year in Media from the Roanoke NAACP and I celebrated my 54th birthday a couple weeks ago. I'm entering a landmark year - planning on retiring on my next birthday....... Oh Happy Day!

In the midst of all this I'm still balancing out the hectic with knitting. After a couple of hiccups on the chart for Shirley Paden's Cabled Shrug, finally making decent progress. It is a beautiful design & the cables are exquisite. Haven't felt so challenged since completing the Every Way Wrap back in 2009.

Y'all know how I love all my knitting gadgets. Special shout-out to my knitsib, Debbie, for this beautiful Yarn Bowl. Been scoping them out for over a year & just like Goldilocks.......some were too small, some were too low......but this one is just right!

The Guernsey & The Shrug

Happy Memorial Day!!! The wonderful start of summer.......bar-b-ques, picnics, beaches & of course - new knitting projects. After finishing so many hats, I need a challenge. So I turned to one of my favorite designers, Shirley Paden. There are several of her patterns in my Ravelry queue including a cabled shrug from the Interweave Knits Fall 2005 issue. Chose the Nashua Alpaca/Merino blend in Periwinkle from my stash.

The design is a simple rectangle with cuffs and an intricate diamond-cable pattern. Since I'm going through my "wrap" phase, I also started Jared Flood's Guernsey Wrap. It's also a simple rectangle with a series of knit & purl patterns that simulate a traditional Guernsey sweater. Chose Elann's Limited Edition Naples - a wool/silk/rayon blend with a great drape. Perfect for any air-conditioned venue.

The Guernsey is my take-along project while the shrug demands all my attention so it's my stay-at-home project. So no excuses for not knitting all the time (lol).

Enjoy any festivities you have going on today. Mom came home from hospital on Saturday full of energy so we'll plant the garden today & enjoy goodies off the grill. Happy Knitting!

Thrown For A Loop

It's been two months since my Mom was diagnosed with lung cancer. She has moved in with me & we're working our way through chemo, nurses, physical therapists, home health aids & far too many trips to the ER. Through all the upheaval, we are blessed with a strong family & support system. Brother stepped up to ensure her move/storage of goods goes smoothly. DD#2 cares for Mom daily while I work. DD#1 travels home every weekend to cook & care for Mom while giving us a break. Auntees call, write & most importantly, send their prayers & love. Speaking of prayers - there is a "prayer circle extraordinaire" all around the country that's providing us strength everyday.

And through it all, I knit. Hats are perfect mindless knitting & Mom calls them a security blanket for her head that seems to always be cold. Sanguine Gryphon's Bugga - a mix of merino & cashmere; Blue Sky Alpaca Silk; and a skein of hand-dyed have been transformed to...........

Although I don't have a pic - a big shoutout goes to my knitsib - Arthella - for knitting Mom a beanie in beautiful shades of pink & purple from supersoft yarn. Speaking of knitsibs, Debbie & I attended our fourth Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival on the Saturday before Mother's Day.

A beautiful day with vendors galore...... Babs, Bugga, Mohair, & a yarn meter - all made their way into my bags (lol). (Need to seriously consider a yarn diet!)

Happy Birthday Ma!

Today is my Mom's 76th Birthday. She's living the life I hope to at that age...... retired 20 years, organizing events in her active-seniors community, & traveling to the casino whenever she wants....... She worked so hard the first part of life, I like to see her enjoying the second part. My handknit gift to her was the Button-up Wrap by cdaniele. Made from Cascade Yarns Eco+ in the Cordovan colorway. She loves the poncho style but arthritis makes it difficult to maneuver over the head. The button-up front makes it secure & easy.

Belated Happy New Year to you all. It was a wonderful holiday season filled with family, friends, & lots of knitting. I finished all the hand knit stocking stuffers (a first for me) and joined the 11 in 2011 challenge on Ravelry. It's finishing 11 sweaters (cardigans, tanks, pullovers, etc) during 2011. It's really just an excuse to knit more (as if I needed an excuse). In addition to pulling out the unfinished Einstein Coat, the Tempest Cardigan, & the Vogue short-sleeve cardigan - I started the Cire-Perdue by Norah Gaughan. Beautiful cable up the center front.

The Hat Brigade

Thanks for all the well-wishes! The good vibes from all of you hit their mark & helped me have a peaceful & uplifting week. And the great equalizer - knitting - also did it's job. I delved right into my pattern queue & selected a few hats I've been wanting to make. The result is the array of hats at the top. From top to bottom - Felicity made from Mirasol Yarn Akapana; Slouchy Beehive Hat made from Araucania Nature Wool Chunky; Claudia made from Berroco Blackstone Tweed; and Garter Ridged Hat made from Ester Bitran Hand-Dyed Andes Wool. All were great fun & best of all made from stash yarn. I plan to gift them all to co-workers who have been hinting all year about wanting something handknit.

Still have a few more last-minute items to knit-up for the family. Today starts my winter vacation (aka knitting-at-home-in-pjs). Won't go back to work until the first week in January. D.C. got the first real snowfall today so it really feels like hibernation time. First, I need to get the tree decorated and all the trimmings together for enjoying the kids & grandkids next week.

Getting In Balance

I am usually the calm one in high stress situations. That went out the window last night when I was struck by a minivan while crossing the street at an intersection near my home. My angel (and the Lord) was looking over me. At the middle of the crosswalk, the sound of the engine accelerating made me step back. But not quick enough - the van ran over the front of my foot. I have never experienced the level of rage that I felt towards the driver. My spirit still feels out of balance.

Emotions have gone full circle. From fear, to anger, to shock, and back to anger after learning that the driver was not issued any citation. While she was extremely apologetic - not giving your full attention to driving; striking a pedestrian in a crosswalk; and not heeding the right-of-way should have circumstances. While the police officer was very polite, it is unnerving that he was more concerned with conveying the insurance reporting procedures to me than sending that message to the driver. I won't vent about the hazards of the "sue them" or "get paid" mentality that prevails in this society. The popularity of shows like Judge Judy, Joe, & Alex attests to that.

The swelling has subsided, the limp and the bruising will eventually go away. The opportunity to get paid doesn't interest me - having drivers who are not distracted does.

Maybe meditation & more knitting can get my spirit back in balance.........

A Home For The Holidays

Yesterday, the girls and I participated in Fannie Mae's Help the Homeless Walkathon that raises funds to support organizations working to prevent and end homelessness in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. I've been walking this one since 2003 and it's one of my favorites because 100% of all registration fees, donations, and sponsorship contributions go directly to the Organizations that provide services to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Plus it's such a family-friendly affair - lots of moms, dads, kids & dogs (yes, even doggie donations in the name of your pet)...... This year there were more than 14,000 registered to walk on this bright & sunny day. Here's a few pics:

After the walkathon, it was home & back to knitting. I finished the cap for DD#2's SO. Used the "Regular Guy Beanie" pattern and Frog Tree Alpaca yarn for a super soft finish.

Started the "Hot Chocolate Warmer" by Eline Oftedal last week. It's a beautiful capelet that's knit in the round from the bottom. Leaf pattern at the bottom designed to resemble the leaves of the cocoa plant. I'm using my stash of Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky in a beautiful blackberry colorway..... so mine is a "Blackberry Warmer". Have finished the body and now working the shoulders. My only modification will be to drop the contrasting neck color. Very nice project.

Have fallen in love with several patterns from Twist Collective - Winter 2010 edition. If you haven't checked it out - run, don't walk - to the website. In case I don't get back to post this week...... Happy Thanksgiving & Happy Knitting to all!

Yowza Saroyan

Began - October 20. Finished - November 5

I'm in love with this pattern and this yarn. The pattern is one piece from start to finish and can be adjusted to different yarn weights & lengths. My modifications were 9 leaves on the increase & decrease and 12 leaves in the center. Have another skein of Miss Babs in Plum that just might become another Saroyan.

Keeping peace in the family. DD#2 liked the hat & gloves I made for DD#1's boyfriend - so I've started another set for her boyfriend. Using Frog Tree's Alpaca Sportweight for this one. Pics coming soon.

Full Knitting Mojo

Good thing I need my job to afford my yarn habit. Feeling like I could just spend my days knitting, knitting, knitting. Maximizing my daily commute time (knitting), my Saturdays at the grand kids football games (knitting), Sundays watching NFL (knitting). Best of all I'm getting projects finished! The proof - hat & fingerless gloves for Martin ........
Getting it in the mail this week for overseas delivery and will follow-up with another care package of socks and a scarf.

Started the Saroyan Scarf designed by Liz Abinante. I tend to shy away from patterns on Ravelry that has been done by the masses but couldn't pass on this one. Using Miss Babs "Yowza" yarn in Russet. The pattern is simple, yet interesting, with its leaf edge and the yarn colorway is beautiful. Haven't decided if it will be a Christmas gift or a keeper. The deciding factor may be if there's enough yarn for a hat...... then it's all mine.

Since I missed the Rhinebeck Festival (again!), a trip to my LYS, Fibrespace, was a must. Last weekend picked up another skein of Miss Babs Yowza in Plum; a skein of Madelinetosh Merino Light in Clematis, and a skein of Madelinetosh Pashmina in Forestry. All three colors were shouting my name (lol) as I roamed the store.

Looking forward to a roadtrip over the weekend and yet another chance for dedicated knitting time (not driving, of course). Happy Halloween & happy knitting, y'all

30 Day Wrap-up

Sooo glad the weather has changed & it's fall. Been crazy-busy but the knitting Mojo is in full effect. Maybe this will be the year that I accomplish my plan of knitted stocking stuffers for all this Christmas.

After a quick trip to Ohio last month, I visited daughter just in time for the 10th Annual Smith Mountain Lake Wine Tasting Festival. What a blast! Delicious wine, swinging band, and plenty of fun-loving patrons.

Saturdays have been filled with cheering on the grandsons at their football games. Nothing cuter than those ankle-biters running the field. Watch out NFL! Been trying to become a "regular" with the Sunday Sit-n-Knit group at A Tangled Skein. I get so much motivation from these knitsibs. Everyone has such great WIPs. Thanks to Thella for encouraging me to try some colorwork. Her projects are beautiful and she knits and spins with no-fear (lol). After all these years of knitting, I had never tried color stranding. For my first project, I finished the Sheep & Wool Hat by Emily Spence.

Super simple project with great results. Need to master the "float" but have definitely added a couple more stranding projects to my queue. Lastly, started my gift knitting with Jeff's Mitts by Lorraine Ehrlinger. Named mine "Martin's Mitts" because they're for my daughter's boyfriend who's been deployed overseas. They will be matched with the Regular Guy Beanie by Chuck Wright and a pair of Man Socks by Hannah Fettig. All great traveling projects I can do on the metro during my daily communte. Hope to finish up in the next week or so.

Start-itis

My que of projects on Ravelry represents my wish list of everything I'd like to knit if I had a gazillion years of "me" time. Since that's not the case, deciding what to make next is always a challenge. This summer I was on a cardigan binge where I started the Cotton Crane Cardi, the Oriel Lace Cardi, and the Tempest Cardi.

All of them beautiful - none of them finished.

While at Stitches Midwest, cousin Jen gifted me some great sock yarn. Of course, in the hotel that night, I started a pair of toe-up socks with the gusset on the bottom (my new favorite sock technique from Wendy Johnson).

As I finish-up the first sock (do I really need 2?), my attention is drawn back to the que. This time it's hats & scarves for fall. Someone please send the knitting police to issue me a citation - I must finish something soon!

Stitches Midwest 2010

I enjoy all types of Yarny Events - from the mega Maryland Sheep & Wool Fest to the local Homespun Yarn Party. This past weekend, I headed up to Schaumberg, IL for the annual Stitches Midwest expo. My cuz, Jen, lives nearby so it was also a chance to hangout with fam & fellow knit-crazy.

This was my second year in attendance and another chance to support some of my favorite vendors: Signature NeedleArts, Miss Babs Yarns, Creatively Dyed Yarns, Habu Textiles, and Webs. My first Stitches event was Stitches East in Baltimore a few years ago. And although I enjoy the Midwest locale, the event didn't quite "wow" me like that first one. Either I'm getting jaded or just anticipating the Rhinebeck festival in October. Anywho...... none of that stopped me from enjoying some stash enhancement.

My favorite purchases by far were Signature's Sock Blockers (that feature the rare ability to hang over your shower rod) and a couple tshirts that tout my love for the hobby (I did say I am a knit-crazy......).

Jen and I both started new projects at the hotel on Saturday night (yep, knit-crazy)that should be done just in time for the trek to Rhinebeck. Until next time........happy knitting!

Yarn As Decor

I am lucky enough to have a dedicated knitting room in the house. Well actually, it's a knitting-slash-guest-slash-exercise-slash-TV room. Since the TV is most often tuned to HGTV, the decor changes very frequently. But one thing never changes - the decor is focused on my love of yarn & knitting. Here's the latest layout.

My favorite part has to be the "yarn planters" and open baskets that keep my stash in sight. After last winter's snowstorms & the most recent freak thunderstorms, I've learned to appreciate the ability to shop from my own stash when the weather turns bad.

Speaking of stash - this week has offered multiple opportunities for enhancements. Knit Happens is closing its doors and A Tangled Skein hosted their popular "Friday the 13th" sale. Willpower kept me away from both events but I decided to use my Fibre Space birthday gift certificate from knitsis Ava for these goodies:
They are both Miss Babs "Yummy" HandPainted Sock Yarns. The first color reminds me of Mardi Gras colors & will make a great pair of celebration socks.

Coming up at the end of the week is Stitches Midwest in Schaumburg, IL. Of course, I will be traveling to attend with my cuz, Jen. Meanwhile, still working on the Paper Crane Cardi. It's coming along nicely & with any luck maybe I can wear it to Stitches. Until next time - Happy knitting y'all!

Happy Birthday Satchmo!

This past weekend was the Satchmo Summerfest in New Orleans, LA - the annual celebration of Louis Armstrong's birthday. What a blast! It's been a couple years since I've traveled to New Orleans & when my feet touched the ground (& the hella-heat hit me), I knew it had certainly been too long. Memories of Hurricane Katrina are still abundant but the city is looking better & better. After spending over 15 years traveling between DC and New Orleans on business, this city holds my heart.

The festival started on Friday night with the Club Strut - a grand party on Frenchman Street where you stroll from club to club listening to the artists. Unfortunately a late thunderstorm nixed the strutting but the talent was still fantastic inside the clubs. Saturday and Sunday's activities were on the grounds of the U.S. Mint with 2 stages outside, 1 stage inside, various dance lessons, and a series of seminars nearby at the Palm Court Jazz Cafe. The heat dictated the plan of the day.......listen to a couple of artists; make your way inside to suck up all the air conditioning possible; back outside for a couple more artists; then down the street to sit & enjoy a couple seminars (again - in air condititioned comfort).
Saturday night was White Linen Night - another stroll around the Arts District & the Contemporary Arts Center - wearing your best white linen fashion.

Best of all I got to catch up with old friends, eat loads of fantastic food, visit the French Market and of course visit the local yarn shop. Hard to believe after all those years in the city, this was my first trip to the Quarter Stitch. A wonderful little shop, packed with knitting, cross stitch, and needlepoint goodies.

Can't wait to go back to my home away from home.

Sock Love

Made my first pair of socks back in 2008. Definitely a knitting accomplishment for me but I didn't catch the "sock bug". My knitsis, Debbie, told me about Wendy Johnson's toe-up sock pattern that features the gusset on the bottom (no picking up stitches). Ahhhhhhh.......I've been bitten by the bug. Not only is toe-up knitting the way to go but that gusset is sweet!

This pair uses Cherry Tree Hill Supersock Merino in the Java colorway. Really like the Waffle Rib stitch from the Sensational Knitted Socks book so it's incorporated in the instep and leg. Definitely the first of many socks to come but for now it's also a diversion from the endless stockinette in the Paper Crane cardigan. I'm finally at the armholes - WHEW!

Back to the Sock Love so I can finish & return to the Cardi........Happy Knitting!

Sip Happens

My oldest daughter lives in southwest Virginia - in the midst of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I love to take Amtrak (prime knitting time) and this holiday weekend was the perfect time for a visit. We spent Friday evening enjoying her homemade pound cake & sangria then headed out to Peaks of Otter Winery & Orchard on Saturday afternoon. What a blast! We sampled their many different fruit wines and blends with names like "Blackberry Cobbler", "Vino Colada", "Strawberry Shortcake", and "Pumpkin Pie". The tasting ends with a challenge to try the "Kiss the Devil" Chili Pepper wine. Made from 30 varieties of peppers, it's really made for cooking but what the heck........
That's my face right after the tasting; my Kiss-the-Devil sticker that I'll wear as a badge of honor; and us with the official Wine Devil. The grounds were absolutely beautiful, filled with plums, apples, and blackberries. After picking a few plums, we headed back up the road.

Independence Day was also wonderful at the Music for Americans event sponsored by The Roanoke Times. We grabbed a sno cone & funnel cake & found a great jam with the Sway Katz & enjoy the fireworks.

Of course weekends aren't perfect without knitting so mine was with me every step of the way. Last week I started Kirsten Johnstone's Paper Crane Cardi using some laceweight cotton stash yarn purchased from Old Mill Yarns last year at Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival. It's a very interesting color that's difficult to capture in a picture - a blue/purple mix. The project is perfect for a road-trip cause it's miles and miles of stockinette using size 2 needles. Finally seeing some progress
and plan to have it finished in time to wear to Stitches Midwest.

Back in the Real World

My 30-days medical leave is over. Physically I'm feeling pretty good. The only lingering side effects are infrequent muscle spasms in the shoulders & back. I use them as my indicator when I've done too much - and quickly rachet it back. I'm back at work now & missing my lazy afternoons & evenings of knitting.

My wallet is breathing a sigh that I'm back to my day job to support my knitting habit (lol). The stash grew quite a bit over the last month as I enjoyed sales at Webs, kpixie, and elann. Finally took advantage of the "Hurt Book Sale" at Interweave to stock up on some titles that I didn't want to pay full price for. The books are fantastic, with no sign of flaws. The shipping costs were equivalent to a book price but didn't kill the deal. In the past month I finished the socks for DD#2 as well as the cotton tee.

Have made great progress on the Oriel Lace Cardigan by Kristen Hipsky. A really fun & interesting pattern that keeps your interest between the raglan shaping and lace pattern. I'm modifying it quite a bit - first by using a heavier alpaca/silk yarn perfect for the fall. Also have decided to finish it with 3/4 length sleeves and a crocheted edging instead of the knitted buttonband and collar. Here's my "in progress" pic:

Committed to finishing it up over the 4th of July weekend so I can start on the next project. Haven't quite decided what that will be. If you haven't seen the Vogue Early Fall issue - check it out........gorgeous selections.

Road to Recovery

It's been two weeks since my surgery to replace a disc in my neck that was pressing on a nerve bundle and causing lots of pain. In addition to the replacement, doctors fused the spine to ensure the new disc stays in place.
Getting lots of rest with the help of the family (my girls are awesome). No more pain in the right arm - just some soreness/stiffness in the back & shoulder muscles. Today was my first follow-up with the orthopedic surgeon who took these cool pics:

Still waiting on the return of my voice and of course all this came with some hardware (aka neck jewelry) that just begs for the "beadazzler":

I am blessed that none of this deters the avid knitter in me (lol) so I'm finally at a point where I can pick up the ole knitting needles. Here's the progress on Raglan Leaf T-shirt:

Waiting.......

Well, my surgery for disc replacement in my neck has been postponed until next week. Everything happens for a reason so I'm trying to be patient. In the meantime, I started a new project. It's the Leaf T-Shirt by Melissa DeBarre. Haven't had much success with raglan sleeves but this is a dream cause it's knit top down. Best of all it's seamless.

With any luck, I'll complete the tee before next week. I still have two WIPs that need to get finished: the Tempest cardigan by Ann Weaver has always been one of my favorites and I'm pairing Miss Babs Swing Yarn (Chocolate Roses) with Creatively Dyed Yarn (Beaches) for a pink/brown combo. Lovin it.....the finished style is shown on the right.

My other WIP is a pair of socks that I began during the Olympics (hangs her head in shame). By the end of the games I had "second sock syndrome" so they've been lounging in the WIP pile ever since. Yarn is the Monsoon colorway from Socks That Rock from a swap with my cuz.

In the quest to finish what I start in 2010, these WILL be finished before I start another new project. By the way, hope all you frugal knitters have discovered that Tuesday Morning now carries discontinued yarns. Limited quantities, but nice stuff - and the inventory changes weekly. My latest great find was the Elsebeth Lavold Silky Cashmere......

That's the sound of dust being blown off this blog.

As usual, work & life have kept me away. For the next 4 to 6 weeks that will change since I'll be homebound after disc-replacement surgery for my neck.

This past weekend was my last chance to kick up the heels for awhile & what better location then Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. Aunt Eunice flew in from Ohio and Cousin Jen came from Illinois. Knitsis Debbie was kind enough to chauffer but Ava was feeling under the weather. Stood in an early line at Starbucks and waited in another line of traffic to enter the fairground but it was all worth it. Here are a couple pics (thanks to Jen & Facebook) of our adventure.

The heat was unbelievable but so were the deals. Tilli Thomas yarns have been calling my name (but not my pocketbook) since last year's Stitches expo. The great deals on the discontinued colors were worth the wait. I know I missed out on alot by the Ravelry reviews, but there's always next year. My mission was complete after getting my Signature circs. Here's the goodies.....

Hi-five to all the young men who shoveled out the neighborhood driveways yesterday. Still waiting on the snowplows to semi-clear the street but it's great to see the sunshine today. What a difference a day makes:

This whole situation is a great testiment to tele-commuting. With the office closed for the last 4 days, I haven't seen my co-workers but we're still functioning via blackberry, the internet, and telephone to ensure things aren't falling too far behind. But enough of that stuff - on to the knitting........

No second sock syndrome here. Expect to finish the second "Yummy" today and making great progress to finish daughter's Every Way Wrap. It was supposed to be a Christmas present but with her birthday right around the corner, it's time to get it done.

Tomorrow starts the Olympics of Ravelry - aka Ravelympics 2010. I'm entering the Sock Hockey event. I'll be starting a new sock project during the Opening Ceremony and commit to having it completed by Closing Ceremony. Stay tuned for my pattern & yarn choices.

Day 4 of the 2010 East Coast Snowdown. A girl could get used to this...... It's actually been a beautiful snow (from the living room window, of course). Yes, we've been without power for 7 - 8 hour stretches and I'm sad that we lost this tree in the backyard.

The good news is that my knitting is thriving. Thank goodness for stash (for all you non-believers - hah!) and thank goodness I can knit by touch.....well only with stockinette. I'm alternating projects - finishing the Every Way Wrap for my daughter when the power is on & working these Top Down socks when the power's out. I'm using the Miss Babs Yummy Superwash yarn. This is only my second time knitting socks & I'm still trying to get the whole gusset-thing downpat before I more on to a more challenging pattern. Love the colorway.

Right before the storm, my favorite man - the postman - dropped off these goodies. He must have known the storm was coming strong & I'd need lots of backup (lol). Actually there were some great year-end online sales at Webs, Knit Picks & Little Knits that I couldn't resist.

I must be entering my "green" period. Happy Knitting!

Merry Knitmas to All

Here's the view from the front door (cause that's as far as I'm going today). We had a blizzard this past weekend that left us with about 2 feet of snow. Now that I'm home, I can enjoy it's beauty. Getting home from New Jersey was quite the adventure that involved me, mom, brother & sis-in-law stuck on the interstate and finally stranded overnight in a Delaware hotel. Even though it could have been a nightmare - the kindness of strangers made everything bearable. Of course, I'll never see those folks again but I'd like to put the good karma out there.

- To the fellow driver who helped shovel out the exit that the plows had blocked with snow......... thank you for the extra muscle. I'm sure the other 4 cars that sped by once we finished were just as grateful.

- To the 2 young samaritans that shoveled & ultimately pulled the car out of the snowbank to the end of the ramp: Much is written & broadcast about the negative image of young, black men. You are evidence to the contrary. The gratuity you refused will be used to "pay it forward" and help someone else in need. As we pulled into the hotel, we saw you helping others on the highway. Bless you.

- To the hotel clerk who had been stranded there himself long after quitting time: thanks for your efficiency & cheerfulness in a time of stress (oh yeah & the late checkout).

- Lastly, to the 3 enterprising young men who shoveled, sanded & salted all the driveways, sidewalks, & porches on the block: Trump has nothing on y'all - kudos for finding a financial opportunity in this rescession.

I'm back home now & using up my vacation time until the first of the year. Enjoying a bit of shopping, some holiday decorating, & the last minute flourish of holiday knitting. A last minute request for the Every Way Wrap has me speed knitting to get this finished by Friday. If not, it will make a lovely entrance into the New Year.

Weekend Knitting

My Fetching fingerless gloves were perfect last week when the cold spell hit D.C but I was missing a very important factor - a hat. So Friday, I started the Cabled Beret designed by Ashley Hasse. It was a really quick knit with beautiful cables and a nice slouch. The Bernat Cashmere Natural Blends that I used for the Fetchings is really warm. So now I have a hat & glove set just perfect for commuting to work.

Hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Mine was great & followed up by an early morning "Black Friday" visit to Fibre Space. High five to the shop....... no better way to get into the spirit of holiday gift knitting than surrounded by others enjoying yarny goodness on sale (lol). Although I only went to pick up a size 9 circ needle (yeah...right) - the Miss Babs yarn was screaming my name the minute I entered the store.

Still Walkin' & Knittin'

This morning was a beautiful day for the "Help the Homeless" 5k walkathon here in D.C. It is one of my favorite annual walks. The sponsors estimate that over the course of a year, 2.5 to 3.5 million people will experience at least one night of homelessness. How devastating! What warms my heart is that each year there are more & more participants (aka more donations) and all along the route there are young performers - singers, theater students, cheerleaders, quartets, bands, etc that perform for the passing crowds. How refreshing to see young'uns take part/interest in such a worthy cause.

On the knitting front, I'm making great progress on my Cap Sleeve Cable Cardi. It's knit from the bottom-up & I'm at the arm holes. Can't say enough about how utterly delicious this yarn feels. Hope to finish in time to model it at Thanksgiving dinner. Here's a sneak peak:
Y'all know how much I love Tuesday Morning - especially their discounted knitting books. Today I was wandering the clearance aisles and found this really cool glass bowl that will be my yarn bowl. I've been stalking Etsy in search of a bowl to hold my yarn cakes (and keep them from rolling when I'm sitting watching TV. This is perfect......

Well must get things in order for the big dinner this week as well as my strategy for shopping the Black Friday sales. I'm excited that this year my newest LYS (Fibre Space) is opening at 6 am (lol). You know I'll be there........

Salute & hi-five to all our veterans. Thanks for all you do in service to our country. Today starts 5 days of the knitting zone for me. Plan to put in some dedicated knitting time; attend Thursday night's "Knit in Space" at Fibre Space; and knit/shop until midnight at A Tangled Skein's "Friday the 13th" knitting event. Finished the Baktus Scarf. Although the pattern was all garter stitch - the Kauni color strands kept it very interesting. Have already ordered another colorway of Kauni from Little Knits. Meanwhile, on to the next cable project (love cables!). It's the Asymmetrical Cabled Cardi by Yahaira Ferreira. Gorgeous cable band, high collar & cap sleeves.

I'm using Mirasol's Miski yarn that I bought from Webs at Stitches Midwest. The yarn is 100% baby llama and super-soft. Have completed a couple cable repeats and really like how the cables pop. Have a great holiday & happy knitting.......

AWBC: In It To End It

We interrupt our regularly scheduled "knitty goodness" for a recap of the recent Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Charlotte, NC on October 24 & 25. The walk had 1,100 participants and raised $2.3 million to advance access to care and find a cure for breast cancer.

This was my 7th Avon Walk. Many folks ask why I continue to walk and I can only quote my latest walker-pin: "I walk because I cannot walk away". You've heard all the stats & hopefully you know the importance of early detection, so I'll jump right into the highlights of the weekend. I walked with my friends Sharon (2nd walk from New York), Priscilla (2nd walk from Durham, NC) & Pat (1st walk from Miami, FL). Priscilla & Pat are twins who registered as Team Double Trouble and developed a cult-like following during the walk. We were also joined by their friend, Darryl (2nd year of walk support). Darryl holds a place of honor cause he has shadowed us along the entire route, taking pics, lightening our load by carrying coats, raingear & extra sneakers & ensuring we're always ok (Thanks Darryl, you rock!).

Opening ceremony started in darkness but with a promise of warm temps and of course rain. I am officially the rain-magnet since it has rained during every walkathon I have done (lol). The inspirational speakers did their job well to send us on our way with pep in our step. It was a sobering moment when Sharon & I came upon the group of young ladies who had pushed their Mom in a wheelchair last year. This year's wheelchair was empty with a sign posted on the back "We Miss You Mom!"

Sun quickly turned to rain but we were prepared - keeping a good pace, stopping at quick stops for hydration & snacks (the peanut-butter graham crackers remain everyone's favorite). Just for luck, I got my picture at Mile 7 to celebrate my 7th year. Mile 10 was lunch and I pulled ahead of the ladies for awhile because of my tendency to hit the wall at Mile 20 or 21. Sure enough, I slowed to nearly a crawl. Luckily, Sharon waited for me at Mile 24 and we finished Day 1 together. Pat & Priscilla entered the Wellness Village with a smile. My feet felt like the size of that giant Reebok sneaker (lol).

After a hot shower (in the heaven-sent trailer), a hot meal, & an Icy-Hot rubdown, I threw on the thermals & tucked into the sleeping bag for the night. We all were able to crawl out of the tents on the morning of Day 2, enjoy breakfast & begin the final 13 miles. The day was rather chilly but no rain. Pat & Priscilla must have eaten their Wheaties - they pulled ahead & met Sharon and I at the finish line. Yes, that is a look of wonder on my face, as well as a look of realization that the hotel was just around the corner. I'll finish this recap with a shout-out to the wonderful Avon crews that keep us going and laughing every year. With folks like the Moo Cow guy, Captain Cleavage, & our own Richard Simmons - who could think about the discomfort. Oh yeah - and blisters don't need chemo! How very blessed we are!

Definitely one of my favorite projects. Had hopes of wearing it to the New York Sheep and Wool Festival (Rhinebeck)over the weekend but the rain & threat of snow kept me tucked away in the warm comfort of home (lol).

Taking a quick break from the Einstein Coat, I cast on this quick & easy Baktus scarf using the Kauni yarn purchased at the Ruhama's booth at Stitches Midwest.

Aren't the colors gorgeous? The principle is to knit a triangle using your exact amount of available yarn. It works with any kind of yarn, but the color strands in this Kauni are really special. (Note to self: must get more of this yarn....)

Next weekend I'll be heading to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Charlotte, NC. Two days & 39 miles. This is my 7th year & I'll be joined by 2 of my WeightWatcher sistahs - Sharon & Cilla. Wish us luck (& sturdy feet)!

In a Gray Mood

My favorite colors are earth tone. Probably why my hair turned gray so early (lol). Currently finishing up the Every Way Wrap (gray tweed). What a great pattern & perfect for those who are cable & chart-challenged like me.

Feeling like a cable semi-pro now so it's time to move on to the next project. Have admired the Einstein Coat in Sally Melville's Book 1: The Knitting Experience. It's a whole lotta garter stitch but beautiful in it's simplicity. Two guesses on the color I selected....... It's a mohair mix from my stash & it's paired with a darker gray cotton that I hope will give the sweater coat a little more stability.

I promise to spice up my next project....... Have some beautiful hand dyed wool with plenty of red & orange undertones. Happy Knitting!

Where Did September Go?

Can't believe it's the end of the month already! What a busy month.....Had a wonderful time at Stitches Midwest in Schaumburg, IL. Was bummed that they moved Stitches East from Baltimore to Hartford, CT - but this made up for it. Met up with my Aunt E & Cousin J for a wonderful weekend. Lots of yarny goodness, great food & fun times. Was able to stop at all my favorite booths: Signature Needles, Miss Babs, Webs, & Creatively Dyed Yarns. J officially dubbed me "crazy" for all my knitting madness - like waking up knitting:

Every Way Wrap

The fall issue of Interweave has some gorgeous patterns. But my favorite by far - and the one that had me running to my stash bin was the Every Way Wrap designed by Okmin Park. It's a simple rectangle that converts into a wrap, a shrug, a vest, and a shawl collared cardigan. I had a granite-color tweed merino bought from Little Knits in a bag sale.....perfect.
Joined a Knit-A-Long with my local knitsistahs as well as an online Ravelry group. I've frogged a few times (first major cable project & first major chart project), but the results are well worth it. The weather here in northern VA turned breezy today - making me more excited to get this one finished - just in time for fall. Happy Knitting!

Space Cadet

OK - I went back to Fibre Space today. That Miss Babs sockyarn was haunting me (lol). But could I just walk in, grab the sockyarn & go?

Of course not! That's the Miss Babs "Yummy" sockyarn in Plum; 4 skeins of The Fibre Company Terra (alpaca, wool, & silk - YUM); a Fibre Girl tshirt and my Fibre Space tote bag (free with purchase). The Terra will become a Springtime Bandit scarf. The scarf was on display & immediately caught me eye. Will look great with jeans.

Sock Bandwagon

I knit my first pair of socks last year. Loved the finished product - didn't catch sock fever...... Well, it's a year later & after a couple of false starts, I'm knitting up my next pair of socks.
It's the twin rib pattern from the Sensational Knitted Socks book - my sock bible. The yarn is Trekking XXL & a wonderful colorway of blues, grays and a tinge of red. My knitsis, Deb, was kind enough to give me a refresher in the Heel Turn & Gusset (totally forgot the process & somehow the instructions weren't clicking). Well I may now have caught the sock bug cause I'm shooting to finish these this weekend so I can start another pair.

Of course the "bug" was helped along by a visit to the Grand Opening of "Fibre Space" in Old Town Alexandria. It's a wonderful shop with friendly staff and a unique inventory of yarn. Fell in love with the Miss Babs line of lace & sock yarn (hence my motivation to finish the current socks). I am definitely blessed to have a choice of LYS in this area.... In Stitches, Knit Happens, A Tangled Skein, Stitch DC - the list goes on & on. Fibre Space will see me often because 1)they sell pretty yarn; 2)they're on my route home everyday; 3)they sell soft yarn; and 4)I'm a yarnaholic.

BTW - DD didn't like the neckline of the striped tank so it's hibernating right now (that'll teach her......)

Knitty Goodness

Dang - can't believe I left my current knitting project on my desk at work. I carry my projects with me cause I knit daily - in the car or on the metro, on my lunch hour & again on the trip home. But yesterday was the end to such a hellified work week, that I literally ran out the building....... Oh well, what better reason than to start a new project.

Hilarious! It's a wooden button scupture I found in Marshall's clearance aisle. You know you are a knit-a-holic when you spot something like this & immediately envision a knitting needle holder. The sales clerk asked me what I was using it for & I did not hesitate. The look I got from him.......priceless!

How 2 Be A Bad-Ass Knitter

If I had to name the top 5 ways to spend quiet days, it would be: knitting, reading, music, movies, and cross stitch...... in no particular order. My knitting and reading worlds have collided and I'm straying from my mysteries & african-american authors to enjoy the Maggie Sefton and Debbie Macomber series as well as KnitLit, the Urban Knitter and Wendy Knits to name a few.

I chuckled after reading Wendy's Bad Ass Knitters' Manifesto and have officially adopted at least 4 of her top 10.......

1. Knit whatever the hell you want...whenever you want.
2. Buy as much yarn (& books & needles, etc) as you want, whenever the hell you want.
3. Never, ever apologize for knitting.
4. Never, ever apologize about how you knit: right-handed, left-handed, or with your toes.

So when my girls tease me for my knitting & yarn obsession, I just smile. When I cast on my fall sweater coat in the middle of June, I smile. As I clip the weekly A.C. Moore/Michael's 40% off coupons, I smile. And when I wrap, throw, or toss my yarn around my knitting needles, I just smile.......cause I Am A Bad-Ass Knitter!

Blowing the Dust Off.......

Been away from the blogworld but not knitworld.

I love summertime! The sun, the heat, the humidity - my favorite time of year. My knitting usually soars in the summer cause I can escape my sleeve-o-phobia. The 2 sleeves on my Minimalist Cardigan took longer to finish than the entire back & front (oh yeah - it's still in the basket waiting for seams). In the meantime, I started and finished this Soleil by Alexandra Virgiel. It's made from Elsebeth Lavold Hempathy - so soft & drapey.... Will definitely make it again & I'll follow the recommendations on Ravelry & add a few inches length to it.

Also started a striped, ribbed shell for DD. On a recent roadtrip to Roanoke, we got this fantastic Kollage Delicious (soybean) yarn at Sereknity Yarn Shop. DD fell in love with the turquoise color and when I got home I found a couple more skeins of a burnt orange in the stash. Planned to rib the entire piece but switched to stockinette stripe at the top. I'm diggin' the result:

For all you bargain knitters, don't forget to check your local Marshalls, Ross, T.J. Maxx & Tuesday Morning for knitting books. I've gotten quite a few books for less than $6! Lastly, found this great buy at Littleknits.com:
It's the Namaste Knitube. Very cool carryall for summer projects. Long enough to carry straights; divided so both ends open separately; strap long enough to carry backpack style.

My Yarn Adventure

I'm an equal-color-opportunity knitter. I love yarn in all colors of the rainbow. So when my friend, Deb, suggested that we take a yarn dyeing workshop - my first thought was "Why should I when I can just walk into a store & go crazy?" Thankfully, Deb persisted and we took Karida's (Neighborhood Fiber Co) workshop yesterday. What a blast....... We learned some awesome techniques & ended up with some great stash!

Thanks to Karida for the pic. My hats go off to all the fiber artists that hand dye. It's quite an endeavor & I'm pleased with my outcome. But in the scheme of things, thank goodness for folks like Karida and Diane (Creatively Dyed Yarns) whose yarn makes me ooh & aah. Keep doin' your thing ladies....... we love ya!

It's March already & I'm fixated on finishing my first sweater of the year for the "Sweater A Month" group on Ravelry. I just have the sleeves & finishing to do on "The Minimalist":

Project Progress

Haven't been here in a while so I'll fast forward thru a great Christmas, mellow New Year & slammin' Inauguration Day. Managed to catch that weird "cough bug" that worked its way into bronchitis for me. Through it all, the knitting needles have been clackin!

I should know the Slouchy Beret pattern by heart - 5 of them completed to-date. This one was a Christmas present for my daughter's friend & co-worker. The final one is for my daughter who likes her bling. She picked out this great yarn at our LYS - In Stitches Needleworks - it's threaded with lots of metallic discs. It's working up nicely & should be finished this week.

We've heard from J's boyfriend in Afghanistan. He indicated he really wanted to learn how to juggle so we found an instruction book & I knitted up these juggling balls & filled them with black beans...... really cute - hope he likes them.

No progress on the Sweater-A-Month challenge. First selection is a victim of my knitting ADD. Really itching to start something new - just can't settle on what it is. So I'm off to browse the Ravelry queue,,,,,,again.

The next week will probably be a blur of activity for me so I wanted to take time to wish you all a very Merry Christmas filled with loads of love & laughter.

After months & months of delays, my daughter's boyfriend deployed to Afghanistan yesterday. He had a 9 hour airport layover here in DC so she drove up (speeding all the way, I'm sure) from southern VA & we found a great seafood place for dinner. Although I have spoken to him by phone over the last 2 years - this was our first face-to-face meeting. Such an awesome young man! As a young boy his mom made alot of his clothing so I've promised him loads of handknit care packages (hmmmmm - cashmere socks might be a nice treat). Here's praying that the next 6 months goes VERY quickly & he's back with us safe & sound.

On the last leg of my holiday knitting & very pleased with everything. There will be a little something handmade in everybody's Christmas stocking this year. Looking ahead to the New Year, I've joined the Sweater-A-Month group on Ravelry. Won't succumb to the pressure but hope to end up with less stash & a few new wearables. First up will be this Inca Marl Ruffled Coat pattern by Jan McCarthy.

Fetching My Mojo

The Fetching Fingerless Gloves pattern by Cheryl Niamath first caught my eye years ago. It calls for knitting on double point needles (DPNs) which I soon found were like cryptonite to me...... I just couldn't get the hang of it. Here I am years later with wonderful knitting buds who probably got tired of me talking about Fetchings & suggested that I try 2 circular needles instead. BINGO! I absolutely love the pattern (completed in 2 days). Decided to use Bernat Cashmere Natural Blends from the stash for my trial pair. Wow - soft, thick & wonderful.

I was so happy after finishing them last week, my knitting mojo went in full swing. Here's the pics so far........

Each item only took a day of knitting so they're high on my list. The first is another One Skein Beret from Artful Yarns Old Western. The second hat is the Purls Arrow Hat that I found on Patternfish.com. Nice pattern & once again only took a day of knitting. My self-imposed yarn diet isn't working very well. I fell in love with Creatively Dyed Yarns at last month's Stitches East event. As I was walking away with my loot (aka purchases), I saw this beautiful colorway.
It's called "Canoe" and it's the most fabulous mix of blue, green & gray! You'll notice that isn't a stock photo. It's the 2 hanks I ordered & received last week. Headed home today to continue the Knitting Mojo Marathon..........

Time Flies When You're..........

Where the heck did the last month go? At last check-in we were celebrating Labor Day.......... now it's Columbus Day; the grandkids have the school routine down-pat; I've switched to my fall wardrobe; winterized the car; raked a few leaves; and my gift-knitting is in full swing. We won't even discuss all the yarn clearance sales I've hit between Alexandria & Roanoke (lol).

I'm still working the Fern Lace Wrap and fully intend to be finished and sporting it on Election night. Here's the latest progress pic:

My youngest daughter fell in love with the Slouchy Beret I made for the older one so naturally I had to whip one up for her. She's so good at the guilt-thing, she even managed to get a matching scarf.

The Leaf Lace Scarf is coming along nicely but I haven't managed to take a new picture. I've been training for my 6th Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in 2 weeks in Charlotte, NC. I continue to walk in honor or memory of some fantastic women. Every year my list grows but I keep the faith that we will find a cure. Y'all pray for me by way of good weather and no blisters!

My oldest has decided to learn the art of knitting. I'm sure this has alot to do with relocating across the country & missing her boyfriend - but hey, whatever works for ya. On my last visit, we went yarn shopping and I showed her the basics. I have yet to see the progress on her garter stitch scarf but she came home Friday with a request for a quick knit - Please Mom; you're so fast Mom; your stuff is so nice Mom; can I have it by Sunday Mom; yada yada yada. It usually goes in one ear and out the other (I hear it from her and her sister all the time) but this is for something special. Her boyfriend is leaving for a six month term in Afghanistan and she's going to visit him this week before he deploys. In true diva fashion, she doesn't want to worry about how her hair looks on her trip (lol). Here's the finished project.

Weekend Getaway

Decided that the holiday weekend was a great time to visit oldest daughter in her new digs in Southern VA. Didn't want to break the bank (airfare should be renamed gotcha-fare) or be behind the wheel for hours & hours so the next best thing.......public transportation! How bad could it be? I have plenty of knitting projects, books, & an ipod to keep me occupied. There were no available seats on Amtrak so I settled on Greyhound. Was that a moan escaping your lips??? Why didn't you tell me??

I'm not a novice - I grew up traveling the Greyhound between West Virginia and Washington, DC every summer and holiday. Arrived an hour early, purchased my ticket, headed outside to grab a seat on the bench & await the bus. I was soon joined by Linwood & his imaginary friend. They had a wonderful conversation filled with obscenities. I'd rather be safe than sorry so I inquired with the desk rep (who was very friendly) if she thought it safe for Linwood to travel in an enclosed space for 4 hours - only to find out Linwood was a regular. She told me to threaten to call the police & he'd shut right up (WTH?) But wonder of wonders, he was ticketed on a different bus. My bus arrived an hour late only to find that the driver couldn't operate the wheelchair lift. If I would have had my super powers activated, I would have lifted that poor man onto the bus but alas it took another hour for the driver to obtain lift instructions by phone. By then there was not a snowballs chance that I would make my connection. The oh-so-friendly rep told me not to worry - there were so many folks from my bus making the same connection that they'd hold the bus (again - WTH?). They did. My plans for a potty break, a soda, & a snack were dashed upon seeing the angry mob who was made to wait all those hours that we were late. And by the smell of my seatmate - he didn't have a chance to freshen up for a few days. So all in all it took me 7 hours for an advertised 4 hour trip. The return was not as eventful but still took 5 hours. But there is a bit of goodness to this story:

Here's the progress on the Fern Lace Wrap. I'm using Fleece Artist Sea Wool in Moss and modifying the pattern to make it shawl sized. Both the pattern and the yarn are a joy to work. I actually completed a couple of rows between tears watching the historic Democratic National Convention so I've renamed it "Opening Night DNC" but most of the work was done in route over the past weekend. Next time, it's the train for me........

Looks like I'll complete my Ravelympics project before the Olympics Closing Ceremony next week. Won't take home the Gold or Silver - but it feels wonderful to be nearing the finish line. I committed to the Everything Bag - a ginormous carryall that lives up to its name...... big enough to carry everything under the sun (lol). Originally planned to use some cotton chenille from my stash but after doing a few rows, only one word came to mind - UGH. Thank goodness for plentiful stash. Switched to a cone of cotton denim ($1.00 at the thrift store) and a cone of mystery yarn from a recent local stash-giveaway. Love it! It even met the seal of approval from my daughter who's begging me to give it to her. Here's the progress pic:

Still have a few rows to finish the back. then I'll block it, line it & give it a cute button on the pocket. All-in-all it's a great project.

Olympics of Summer

Been MIA from the blog, but not from knitting. Gearing up for Ravelry's version of the knitting olympics. I'm officially signed up for the Bag-N-Tote Backstroke for Team Virginia Stars.......Revving up to start & finish (in 17 days) the Everything Bag by Suss Cousins.

In the meantime, found a great book at Tuesday Morning called Handknit Style by Linden Ward and Beryl Hiatt. Several sweaters jumped onto the gotta-make-it list but this one got my immediate attention.
It's called Summer In The City. Using Cotton Patiné in a creme color that I recently purchased from Little Knits. My plan is to have it finished before the Ravelympics so I'm knitting like a fiend. The yarn is kinda "splitty" (if that's a real word) by I love it's soft texture. Pictures coming soon!

Next week is vacation. Roadtrip to visit daughter. Planning to hit every yarn shop between here and Roanoke.......... Knit on my friends, knit on.

Started these top-down socks using the Double Moss pattern from Sensational Knitted Socks. One word - blah! Love the pattern & love the yarn but the 2 together just don't mesh. The Sockotta yarn will probably work much better in a rib or stockinette stitch so off we go to the frogging pond (RIP IT!)

Loved the pattern. When blocked, it has a much more lacy look but I really like the unblocked version. The bamboo yarn was very nice to work with. I was disappointed a couple of times when the colorway disappeared. It occurred in a couple of areas so it appears to be part of the design. I plan to do another one - in the blocked, more lacy version.

Last night was "Stitch-N-Pitch" night for the DC Nationals. It's a collaboration between Major League Baseball & The National Needlearts Association promoting all forms of needle arts (knit, crochet, cross stitch, embroidery, etc). For stitchers, it's a great night to grab your project and head to the stadium for a night of stitching & fellowship. And what a long night it was........ the game went into 14 (yes - fourteen) innings! Made new Ravelry friends in my section as well as shouting-out to Jill, Chelette & Cici in the next section. Even talked my brother & his friends into attending so I could bring back extra "goodie bags" for the ladies at next month's stitch2gether. What a great night - here's a couple of pics:

On the knitting front, I have sent the One Skein Tank Top to hibernation & started the "Cream of Spinach Scarf" by Larissa Brown. I've renamed it the Cream of Bamboo Scarf cause I'm using the Bamboo Splash yarn bought at A Tangled Skein last weekend. My other mod is to widen it so it's more of a wrap/stole instead of a scarf. Thanks to Stitch-N-Pitch, here's my progress.

I promised pics of all the weekend happenings but in my haste to get everywhere - the camera was left at home. So you'll have to settle for my after-the-fact snapshot. You'll see the Bamboo & Hemp & Malabrigo yarn I bought on Friday night as well as the swapped yarns I got on Saturday at WWKIP Day.

The weekend did not disappoint. I absolutely loved A Tangled Skein and thankfully it's not too far from the job so I'll visit again soon. Their yarn selection is spectacular (and I finally found the size 2 Addi Lace Turbos). Saturday afternoon at Belle Haven Park was the perfect Knit-In-Public day with some scooting about to stay in the shade (lol). Thank you Kate for setting it all up. I made lots of new Ravelry friends and managed a few rounds of the sock mate. Speaking of which - yes that is a FINISHED PAIR of socks in my pic - WAHOO. On to my next project.

Summertime Unwinding

Oh the joys of summer! This weekend is shaping up to be a good one. The fun begins tonight at A Tangled Skein's Friday-the-13th Knit Event. From 7 pm to midnight you'll find me there enjoying the refreshments, live music, sit & stitch, and super sales. This will be my first time visiting the shop & I've heard nothing but great things. Tomorrow is WWKIP Day & I plan to chill on the banks of the Potomac River at Belle Haven Park with fellow Ravelry knitters. There's even a yarn swap planned so I need to decide what I'm gonna part with outta my stash.

This is my second weekend in a row of pure knitting bliss. Last weekend was our June Knit2gether. The summer schedule is hectic so Deb & Jeannette couldn't make this one but Cici & Chalette from 2 Sistahs That Knit blog (and Ravelry) joined Ava & I. It was such fun getting to really meet them (we crossed paths at MD Sheep & Wool) and I'll admit that talking sucked up all my knitting time (lol). I'm in awe of all the great knitting going on(check out Ava's Washi and Tsumugi Coat)and I have high hopes of finishing my sock's mate this weekend. Will be sure to post pics of all the festivities, but in the meantime - here's pics from the June Knit2gether:

As I was searching through Sally Melville's Book 2: The Purl Stitch, I had one of those "aha moments" when I read her suggestions for raising public consciousness about the knitting community.

1. Knit in public
2. Be willing to learn anything that will make you a better knitter.
3. Access your knitting community.
4. If there's no knitting guild in your area, start one.
5. When you knit for others, make sure it works for them. (It may mean knitting something you don't like, in a style you don't like, in a color you don't like.)
6. When you find yourself excusing a mistake, you need to fix it or repeat it (if done 3 times or more, it's a design feature).
7. Notice - and compliment - the knitting you see.
8. Get the guys knitting.

As I rediscover my love of knitting, I plan to be the best knitter/crocheter I can be.

Knit Happenings

Friday night was my first lesson on sock making from my Ravelry-friend Deb. So far, so good - in fact I'm kinda diggin' this. For years I steered away from sock making because: 1)I couldn't get the hang of working DPNs; and 2)All that work for something on your feet that nobody really sees. Deb put it in perspective, noting that the feel & comfort of homemade socks as well as the accomplishment factor outweighs the "gotta show it" mentality. I chose to make my first pair with Uruguay DK from my stash (a merino, alpaca, silk blend). Here's the progress pic:

Working them on 2 circulars is fantastic. The Sensational Knitted Socks book is a loaner in case I get stuck - but I'm sure to be making that SOS call to Deb as soon as I get to the heel flap, heel turn, & gusset (lol).

I discovered Old Mill Yarns at last month's Sheep & Wool Festival. Their mill ends are too much of a bargain to pass up so I made an online purchase. It arrived last week. A one-pound cone of bronze cotton; a one-pound cone of teal novelty slub; and two-pounds of deep gray cotton. Cottons are getting top billing in my wardrobe (these hot flashes are the pits) and I look forward to making some great pieces with this new stash.

Lastly, I went to Tuesday Morning for their 4-day 50% off clearance sale on Saturday. They had a fantastic corner grid shelving unit that rang up at $6.50. Of course I got 2 units with something special in mind. Behold: my new stash storage corner! Not bad for $13.00.

My First Meme

Spent a quiet Memorial Day with family (& lots of food of course). Oldest daughter was visiting from Louisiana & may soon be moving back to the east coast (hurray!) if the job she interviewed for comes about. Please send lots of good vibes her way. Mods to the Cardi

The yarn & the pattern seem to come together in this one for a great piece. I made a modification to the front - the pattern calls for it to be slanted but I've chosen to make it with a straight front. Planning to make a plain tank for underneath & have a cardi set. Searching for some cute glass buttons that will compliment the yarn but not overpower the pattern.

Took a break from knitting this week while traveling for business. I got spooked about TSA and their inconsistent regulations on knitting needles. Visions of me being escorted to jail for assaulting "Checkpoint Charlie" who tried to take my needles was not pretty. Instead I took my cross stitch project (yes, with scissors) and made some progress on the Pray Tree. You can see it on my other blog Stitches of Heritage.

An afternoon of new friends, snacks, shopping & knitting. Could it get any better than this? Yesterday, I hosted a knit2gether with some fantastic local ladies I've met online. The connection was immediate & I feel like I've known them forever. Deb and Ava are both on Ravelry and Jeannette hopefully will soon be there too. Deb was my partner-in-crime earlier this month at the Sheep & Wool Festival. Ava and I are in several of the same Ravelry groups. Jeannette, Ava & I also share a love of cross stitch. Everybody brought their most recent project as well as something for show-and-tell (Ava rocked with her knitted necklace). We actually spent more time going thru pattern stashes & chatting than working the projects but nobody was complaining. In fact, we ended the afternoon doing what knitters do best - I quick shopping trip across the street to In Stitches where everybody managed to find a little somethin'. Momma's Day

Special shout out to all those that nurture, care, feed, & teach the little ones (human & furry). I hope you are receiving your thanks on a continual basis so today can just consist of a really good meal & a chance to relax (lol).

Finished the first panel of the tank top & desparately needed a break from stockinette stitches. After a midnight raid on my pattern library (yeah, a bit of insomnia), I decided to start the short sleeve cardigan from Vogue Knitting's Spring/Summer 2007 magazine. The eyelet lace pattern is a joy to work & I'm using the eggplant rayon yarn I got last weekend at the sheep & wool festival. Here's a peek:

You can't see the back of the cardi but it has eyelet lace & ribbing topped off with stockinette...... I just can't escape it. At least I'm getting to use my new Signature Stiletto needles. The pointed tips are exquisite. Gotta find a way to purchase an entire set (Maybe my girls will read this before birthday, Christmas, or next Momma's Day!)

Tank Progress, Stash Diet, & Saying Goodbye

This one skein tank is interesting. The seam is done up the center front and center back and one panel faces purl-side & the other panel faces knit-side. Some of the comments on Ravelry were that it was short & too wide. I decided to be pro-active (instead of reactive) and make it in a smaller size for a better fit and with a very soft yarn so it could hang gracefully. The Fino (doubled) was an excellent choice. My only complaint is that the stockinette stitch is b.o.r.i.n.g. - but at least it gives me a chance to watch T.V. or movies without fear of messing up the pattern. Here's my progress - the neckline to the left & the partial armhole to the right. Another week or so & it's on to the next project.

After inflating the stash with those goodies from last weekend's festival, I've pledged to finish 3 projects (includes this one) before making any new purchases. Just picture me as the "monkey trio" see no sales, hear about no sales, & speak no sales.

Lastly, today was the homegoing celebration for my grandmother (in-law). She was an awesome 99 years old. She had 1 child, 3 grandchildren, 9 great grands, and 13 great-great grands. She outlived her parents, husband, siblings & her son. To show you she lived her life to the fullest - her obit includes the name of her close friend and dedicated companion............ he's 98 years old & they met 5 short years ago. We will miss your smiling face & laughter, Grandma Alberta!

MDSW 2008

Oh boy - what a day. The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival was wonderful. This was my first time attending. The past few years, I have done the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer on this weekend so I never knew what I was missing (BTW - GO WALKERS - see you in Charlotte in October!). My newest friend, Deb, is an MDSW veteran & the best tourguide a gal could have. Spent a bit of time browsing the animals but the call of the vendors was overwhelming.

From Tess' Designer Yarns, to Old Mill Yarn, to Signature Needle Arts, to Misty Mountain Farm, to a great discount yarn spot selling 6 wool skeins for $25 (sorry, I was suffering from yarn euphoria by then & didn't look at the biz name) - I was an equal opportunity spender.

Proud of myself cause I got the main thing I went for - a set of custom Signature Needles with stiletto points. But even happier with all the great stash that will keep me busy from now until the next festival. Drumroll please..........................

A tote, of course to carry it all; a 2-1/2 lb (yes pounds) of purple/navy cotton; 2 lbs of eggplant rayon; 6 skeins of wool; 2 skeins of microfiber ribbon; a ribbon tank top pattern; the stiletto needles and a set of ebony needles.

Sidestepped the lure of funnel cake but caved in at the kettle korn, pretzel, & lemonade stands. Needless to say with all this shopping, I totally missed the Ravelry meetup. Spotted lots of Ravelry buttons & even got a glimpse of Jess early in the day. Fortunately I recognized Cici and Caj from the 2 Sistahs That Knit blog (and Ravelry). Isn't it funny how you meet someone for the first time & feel like you've known them forever? Well here we are - Me, Deb, Caj & Cici - with a beautiful backdrop of yarn.

Let me go setup my "MDSW Fund" jar for next year's purchases...............

Been consistently knitting on the One Skein Tank - in the car (while DD's driving), on the metro, at the dentist office, before bedtime, etc. Yesterday I pull it out of my project bag & dang it - there's a big (very big) snag near the beginning. Tried & tried to smooth it out but alas, I had to frog it & start over again. I am not deterred. Serious knitting time will be included in my weekend activities (and maybe a quick trip to Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival). Will have new pics next week.

Starting Tank Top

I chose the Tank Top from Leigh Radford's One Skein book as my next project. It's two panels sewn together at the center front and back. One panel is the knit side & the other panel is the purl side. I'm using Alpaca with A Twist's Fino in Seaglass from my stash. Here's today's progress:

I'd probably be bored with all stockinette stitches, but this yarn is so soft, it's a pleasure to knit! Ran into Stitch DC after work trying to find the Addi Turbo Lace needles - but no luck (& no patience to order them). But all was not lost cause look what I got instead:

OMG!!!! It's Lorna's Laces - Helen's Lace in blackberry. I am in no way a yarn snob (had never even heard of Helen's Lace) but I swear my heart started racing & forehead sweating when I spotted it (lol). There are no words to describe how it feels. What will I make? Who knows - but dang it's gonna be beautiful.

This elongated tank is sweet! The change in basketweave pattern halfway thru makes it interesting and the Cotton Flamme gave it more texture than the model. The scooped neck was a little too deep for me so I shortened the armholes. Shout outs to Deb & Jeannette - love our new knitting group! Special thanks to Mary for sharing her stash so I could complete this tunic.

April Progress

Patterns & Yarns & Groups.......Oh My!

I am addicted to Ravelry...... there - I said it. Since receiving my invitation to join this knitting and crocheting community a month ago, I have become obsessed with all things yarn. All my high hopes of finishing Peace Angel in a few months have vanished but in it's place are a slew of spring/summer knits that I'm aching to produce. I just wish someone would take the huge leap to create something similar for the cross stitch community (There's a Ravelry group for knitters who also cross stitch - SWEET). So here's what I have to show for the last month. You may remember Beachcomber Tunic. Finished the front & back & decided to ditch the sleeves & just edge it with a row of single crochet. Here's how it's looking right now - before blocking & edging.

Really loved working with the Cotton Flamme yarn so I grabbed the Dusty Blue from my stash and started the Basketweave Tunic from Vogue Knitting's Spring/Summer 2005 issue. It's working up quickly & should be a great addition to the summer wardrobe.

Not to fear - on last week's trip to the LYS, I picked up a few cross stitch charts too. I'll be back!

Although I can cross stitch, knit, & crochet almost anywhere - it's a dream to have a dedicated space in my house. When the youngest moved out, I quickly converted her room in hopes of having my spot. Alas, the computers, printers, scanner and overall storage for stash, books & magazines quickly filled the space.

But I'm finally in heaven. Here's my newly created stitching-spot in the corner of my bedroom. I can now stitch in a comfy BIG chair w/ottoman, next to the window, facing the TV & DVD player. Got my cross stitch & Ott light on my left and a decent yarn stash on my right (Someone gave me a great tip about the mirror behind the chair - it reflects light for great late-night stitching). Should I ever get tired, it's just a hop & skip to the comfort of my bed........ Someone send out a search party if I haven't been heard of in a few weeks (lol)!

BTW, Big Lots has a yarn clearance sale. Here's the Lion Brand Chenille I picked up for $1.50 per skein - I bought all 13 skeins in the bin. I better go back to work soon......

Mar 08: Progress

I've managed to make progress on a couple of projects. Finished a crocheted beanie to compliment the neckwarmer I made a couple months ago. Also the "sistah" finally has lips & some filling to her church hat. Haven't picked up Peace Angel lately but she's next in line.

Just when I was basking in the glow of not heading out to work everyday, my co-workers reminded me that I work with a great group of folks. I received 2 flower arrangements, cards, and giftcards that I put to good use at Michaels for all this:

I was browsing thru my knitting blogs and hit upon this awesome site: The House That Yarn Built.

Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29, 2005 and devastated not only Louisiana, but also Mississippi. Over two years later, New Orleans and what happened there has largely been relegated to the back pages of newspapers, or only mentioned when politicians are trying to get elected. One of the hardest hit areas in New Orleans was the Lower 9th Ward. Brad Pitt's foundation - Make It Right - is raising funds to build homes in the 9th Ward. Each home costs $150,000.

The House That Yarn Built is a Team on the Make it Right site with a unique perspective: If 7,800 knitters would donate the equivalent of one skein of sock yarn ($20), a family in New Orleans might be able to get their lives back on track. Of course, you don't have to donate $20 - every increment helps. Many of us have yarn stashes that can keep us in yarn for years without ever having to darken the door of the local LYS or point and click on our favorite online shop. What do ya’ll think? I LOVE my local needlework shop but I try to limit my trips there. Too much temptation! Last weekend, I ran in to pick up floss for a new project and I came out with everything but the floss. I swear I walk through the door & go into a trance - ooh new charts, old charts, do I have that chart? To make matters worse, I turn around & staring me in the face is this:

It is Chocolate Bulky Rayon Chenille from Blue Heron Yarns. No picture could do it justice. I'm turning in my "Sale Queens of America" membership cause I didn't even look at the price tag (lol), just headed for the register.

Dec 07: Happy New Year

I reached so many milestones in 2007, I kinda hate to see it end. I celebrated my 50th birthday; achieved my goal weight; reached Lifetime status with WeightWatchers; walked 39 miles in my 5th Avon Walk for Breast Cancer; was promoted at work and increased my charities; saw the youngest grandbaby start kindergarten (better stop calling him a baby); got my Mom settled in a senior community where she has lots of companionship; displayed my crafts in a "real" shop; and cheered as both daughters became very independent young ladies. Of course with all this good came some sad like losing my Uncle Ed to kidney disease.

With all that under my belt, I have high hopes for 2008. My only resolution is to continue my quest to fulfill God's purpose and live my best life. I am thankful for all those I have met here and the talent that's been displayed and shared. I'm anxious to see what y'all have in store for next year (lol). I'll close the year with a pic of my current project - a knitted scarf & glove set using Uruguay DK - a marino, alpaca, silk blend yarn in a wonderful shade of grape.

O.k. - the mimosas are waiting along with the Greys Anatomy 3rd season DVD, so I'll wish everyone a safe & HAPPY NEW YEAR.

It's been ages since I've completed a sweater and can't remember making one for me. Consistently made sweaters for my girls as they were growing up, but you know the story...... by their teen years they preferred sweaters, caps & scarves from Gap, Old Navy & Guess to handcrafted "Mommy Gear". Now that they're grown, I have a long list of requests. But they'll just have to wait in line!

Jul07: Beachcomber Tunic

I have my own little min-rotation going. Splitting my time between knitting the Beachcomber Tunic from Interweave Crochet's spring issue and cross stitching M Designs Rejoice Tree ornament. Here's my progress pic of the tunic back. Excited to finish the knitted part so I can see how the crochet edging will complement it. I'm substituting the recommended yarn with Crystal Palace's Cotton Flamme. Loving the texture!

Y'all know I love a sale & what could be better than something knitted on sale. I picked up this Cable Knit Hobo Bag from Old Navy today. On clearance - it was $8.99! I couldn't knit one for that price. We're talking fully lined with wallet & cell phone compartments. The strap is short but perfect to carry around my projects. They carry it online (it's on sale there too) & it's made from a combination of paper straw & cotton - whatever....... it's sturdy.

I finally have a couple of days off, so I'll be back with pics of Rejoice ornament as soon as I finish a couple more letters.

I plan to spend most of the day manning my friend's giftshop so what better way to spend the downtime than working on the tunic that I've been neglecting.

In other stitching news, last week I actually picked up a needle & linen and started a quick stitch project. It felt so good to get back to something I love so much. Hope to have pics real soon.

May 07: Knit & Crochet Happiness

This is one of those times I'm happy I learned to both knit and crochet. The spring issue of Interweave Crochet has this beautiful summer tunic that is a combination of knit with crochet edging.

Think I'll use the Crystal Palace Cotton Flamme yarn I bought awhile ago. It's a beautiful coral color that will look great for spring. Of course that means I have to finish it in time to wear for spring............

Tonight was the Stitch-N-Pitch baseball game sponsored by the Washington Nationals MLB team. I bought my ticket months ago with high hopes but wasn't able to leave work in time to attend. What a great concept: bring you needlework project (cross stitch, embroidery, knit, crochet, etc) and stitch the night away during the game. If anyone is familiar (they supposedly have them scheduled all across the country), please let me know how it went. Maybe I can travel up the road for Stitch-n-Pitch with the Orioles.

Apr 07: Been Such A Long Time

Wow - have not posted progress pics in soooooo long. Seem to have lost my cross stitch mojo - lots of charts I want to start or finish but no motivation to just do it. Between a new job, training for the walkathon, relocating my mom, & all the stuff inbetween I can't seem to concentrate on detailed work. But I haven't abandoned needlework completely. Every night I manage to stitch at least 2 rows on the "plain Jane" afghan while I catch the late night news. It's now looking like this:

Really big & heavy.......... I'm on the last skein of cream yarn before starting the edging. Since the cold & wet just won't quit here in VA - I may get some use out of it yet this season.

A few weeks ago my brother gifted me with some great shelving units. With help of some vibrant cubes from Target & lots of file boxes & book/magazine organizers from ABC Distributing, my office & craft space looks really cool. check it out - even my yarn stash has a place.

Keeping the faith that life will slow down soon & my mojo will return with a vengence. Happy stitching to all!!!

Mar 07: Stash Delivery

Finally, finally, finally......... the rest of my reward stash arrived yesterday from Little Knits. It's Crystal Palace Cotton Flamme. The Cornflower Blue is what I plan to use for the remake of the Sampler Afghan and the Key West Coral will make beautiful spring sweaters. Must not get distracted - I already have so many stitching (cross stitch & knitting) projects in heavy rotation but life keeps getting in the way. I made a resolution this year to do some type of stitching every day - even if it's only one row at bedtime. That's how the blogs have spoiled me - I so admire the ladies that manage to do it everyday..........

But the weather has finally broken (I hope) and I must pump up my training for the next Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. May 5 and 6 will be my 6th walkathon & I'll be following it up in October with the Avon Walk in New York.

Mar 07: WIP & Stash

Here's progress on the second block of the Sampler Afghan. It's the Little Shell Stitch. Haven't received my new yarn so continue to chug away at the blah-blue. Saw a post asking for local donations of afghans for the homeless, so when I finish this one, it's headed that way. BTW, isn't the basket beautiful? Found it on clearance at Marshall's for $7.00. Great way to carry my projects upstairs & downstairs. Also treated myself to a trip to my LNS/LYS - In Stitches Needlework. Stopped in for silk floss for M Design's "Cherish" Tree Ornament chart. They had a few more of the designs, so I got the "Rejoice" and "Peace" charts. To really torture me, there was a 50% off yarn sale so I got this beautiful 100% wool - Andes (made in Chile). It's shades of gold & olive that should look great as a felted purse or tote. Have never tried felting but have collected some wonderful patterns online. As if that wasn't enough, picked up Lizzie Kate's Santa '04 chart. Have loved it since Sharon displayed hers on her blog. You're probably wondering when I'm getting back to cross stitch........ soon, very soon.

March 07: The Sampler

Nope - It's not a cross stitch sampler, but the Leisure Arts knitted Sampler Afghan. I bought the book ages ago with the intention of learning some really great patterns. It contains 60 stitch patterns that you can mix and match to create your own afghan design. Each block is 12 inches and the final piece takes 20 blocks. I finished my first block on the return flight from Houston - the Double Parallelogram. Now I'm on to a pretty Shell Stitch block. If you look closely at the pic below, there are some really great patterns in the booklet. My downfall is that I started using stash yarn. Yes - it's acrylic ; OMG it's baby blue; and there's soooooo much of it! In my own defense: (1) I didn't buy the yarn, it came by way of the yarn fairy; and (2) I didn't expect to like the finished pieces, just wanted something to do to soak up all the excess travel time. So to remedy the situation, I jumped online to the Little Knits site and ordered the Crystal Palace Cotton Flamme in Cornflower Blue (really soft & beautiful).
My first time using the site (saw it on another blog). The 10-skein bundles are a nice option. While I wait for my new (better) stash to arrive, I'll go ahead & use up the baby blue skin-irritant as practice pattern pieces. In the end, maybe I can give it away on my local FreeCycle.

Feb 07: Almost Instant Gratification

What a "quick knit"! Used 4 skeins of Lion Boucle Wild Berries (from the Dollar Tree) to knit up this hat & scarf combo. The subscription to Interweave Knits has my knitting mojo really coming out full force. A handknit sweater is definitely in my future.

But first, I just have to stitch this Waxing Moon Design. Definitely my motto for the grandboys. Headed out to Texas tomorrow on a biz trip so maybe between the airport layovers & hotel downtime I can have it completed before the weekend. Happy stitching to all .......

Feb 07: "Baby - It's Cold Outside"

Brrrrr .......... it's definitely winter which means I've been hibernating. Not much cross stitch going on but plenty of knitting. Here's my youngest daughter modeling the hat I made for her. Shes's the one who likes bright colors so I used Lion Boucle's Popsicle. Knitted on circulars using about 3 ounces of yarn. Super simple - straight knitting. She likes it so much I'll have to do a matching scarf. Still working on my "Plain Jane" afghan. It's getting big enough to serve double duty as a project & a lap robe.

Super Bowl vs. Knitty Gritty - what's a girl to do?? O.k., I'll commit to the squares, but they can't expect me to miss the Super Bowl AND Prince at halftime(lol)!! Looks like a job for Tivo......

DIY Network is playing the field on Super Sunday with its first ever Knit In by encouraging needle arts enthusiasts to knit and crochet for charity. Jan 07: Arghhhh!

After a couple weeks of stitching, I am really not liking "The Baptism". The model on the chart looks so great but I was suspicious of many of the colors when I picked them out. Sure nuff, why are there green stitches for hair & grey stitches in the skin tones? In my opinion it throws off the design. I am so frustrated!! It will be a major effort to start over after substituting all the weird colors. I'm certainly not up to that right now, so it goes to the UFO pile. I've pulled out the Yoruban Women kit as my next project.

On a much better note, I'm proud to announce that after 4 years on WeightWatchers, I reached my goal weight on Tuesday. I've gone from being an overweight (40+ lbs), fast-food-eating couch potato with high blood pressure to a marathon-walking, soon-to-be-50, fit vegetarian (lol). Biggest lesson has been that it's truly a lifestyle change & not a diet so I look forward to the next 6 weeks of maintenance to officially become a Lifetime member. Oops, forgot to mention how my stitching has helped. Its really hard to snack when you have needle, scissors, crochet hook or knitting needles in your hand. Speaking of which - I'm calling this the "Plain Jane" Super Bowl afghan. No real design or color pallette means I can pay close attention to the game while getting rid of some stash..........

Dec 06: Happy New Year's Eve

My final project for 2006 is a scarf and glove set for ME! Just using up the yarn remnants from my Mom's afghan (it is so warm & cozy). Couldn't decide whether to knit or crochet so I knitted the scarf, added a crocheted edge & crocheted the gloves.

While at Michael's yesterday getting linen & floss for my first cross stitch project of 2007, I picked up these goodies. DD#2 wanted her gloves in red & black. That child loves bright colors - so I found a combo. The 50% off coupon from last week's paper was burning a hole in my pocket so I finally picked up the Weekend Knitting book that was on my Christmas list. Most importantly I have all the materials to start "The Baptism" tomorrow. I chose a 28 count creme linen as the background. With any luck, I'll have weekly progress pics to share.

Dec 06: Christmas Gifting

Hope your Christmas Day was a merry one. Mine was wonderful - full of fellowship and dining with family and friends. After trying unsuccessfully (over & over & over again) to make the "Fetching" fingerless gloves shown on the left for DD#1, I made a cute little crocheted pair. No matter how hard I tried, couldn't get my knitted stitches tight enough between the double points. The crocheted ones were quick & easy (thank goodness, it was Christmas eve). The yarn is Paton's Nuance - a mohair blend with a gold metallic thread running through it. The gold doesn't show up in the photo but it gave them a nice sparkle. Mirrored the double-crochet pattern in a matching scarf (sorry no pic & DD's gone back home). Was stressing about whether she'd like them but her sister has put in an order for a pair in something "bright & colorful" which is always a sure sign that I've hit on something. Committed to taking a class on how to make socks so one day I can make a pair of the Fetching gloves for myself (y'all know I'm stubborn - can't let it beat me!)

Dec 06: Attention Knitters

Run - do not walk - to your nearest Marshall's dept. store. In the clearance section you will find this fantasic book for $3.00!! Yes - $3.00!! It's called Hollywood Knits Style and supposed contains modern designs worn by the stars (Jennifer Lopez leg warmers, Russell Crowe ribbed cap, etc) but who cares - it's $3.00 and has some really great patterns.

I'm sure shoppers were snickering at the crazy lady ooohing and aahing as she flipped through the pages - but take a look at just 2 of the 30 designs contained inside. The "Everything Bag" will be carrying my everything very soon and although these old abs can't sport the "Zip-up Pullover", I'm sure my DD could do it justice. There's also a great "Long Shawl-Collar Coat". My store had lots of copies - in fact, what was I thinking? I'm headed back to get more for my knitting buddies - what a great gift. Happy Shopping!

Dec 06: Ready for the Post Office

Here's my final batch of baby caps for "Caps to the Capital". Will tag and mail them tomorrow so they can get to the Save the Children Foundation before the January deadline. They were really fun to crochet and brought back memories of my babies (now grown) and grandbabies (not so grown).

Putting the final touches on my handcrafted gifts. Don't want to post pics and spoil it for the recipients (you never know who's reading the blog) so I'll post pics after the holidays. Got some much needed help from my Aunt Eunice on how to knit those darn fingerless gloves for DD. Gonna give it one last try & hopefully have them boxed and bowed on Christmas morning. Thanks Auntie........

Dec 06: Holiday Cheer

I know I've been AWOL for quite a while. On the downslope of my mission to complete one handcrafted item for everyone on my gift list. Things were going really well until I started these fingerless gloves for oldest daughter. I've seen them on a couple of blogs & their real claim to fame is that it should only take a weekend to whip up a pair. I've never knitted gloves or socks but sheesh - it can't be as difficult as I'm making it (Am I really supposed to knit with 3 needles?). I've read through the directions countless times and have started and stopped just as many times. Gonna go to my "how to" books to decipher what I'm supposed to be doing. Hopefully in time for DD to get these at Christmas (lol).
In the meantime, got some great stash this weekend. First, I'm at my favorite Dollar Tree store and there on the bottom shelf is Lion Boucle!! I cannot pass up $1 yarn but I did limit myself to 8 skeins (how's that for willpower?). Next stop - Michael's - where I was supposed to be just grabbing a small circular needle to make hats for the grandbabies. But the Bernat Matrix was shouting at me: 2 skeins for $4.00!! What's a girl to do? Of course, buy it.......
I know it looks like I've forsaken my favorite pasttime - cross stitch - but don't be fooled. The cold weather here in VA has me hibernating so there's a little bit of everything going on. The new year of course will bring new projects and I've decided to tackle "The Baptism" from Green Apple Southern Roots series. It's 239 x 140 stitches - large by my standards. I'm looking for the just the right linen cause the colors are so muted & it's definitely one that I'll keep for myself. Happy stitching, knitting & crocheting to all. Be back soon........

Nov 06: Fall in Virginia

I love Virginia in the fall. The leaves changing colors are gorgeous!!! I've added a few minutes to my commute so I can drive down the parkway along the river everyday. So of course, my mind is full of thoughts of knitting sweaters, afghans, hats & scarves. My stash of knit/crochet patterns rivals my stash of cross stitch charts but I'm always on the lookout to add a little something. Yesterday I came upon this Berrocco pattern that I love. It's a swing crop sweater called Charlize. Thankfully, the fuzzy yarn has been discontinued, but I'm loving the shape and can picture it knitted up in something very soft. This weekend I'm headed to the Stitches East Knitting Expo in Baltimore to shop at the marketplace. I had contemplated going for a couple of classes, but honestly, if I learn any new techniques right now I'll be distracted from finishing all the holiday cross stitch projects I have going. But if I happen to fondle just the right yarn - you can bet that Charlize will become my next WIP.......
